Overseas Adventure Travel is part of the Grand Circle family. They specialize in small group tours for mature travelers. Land Adventures are limited to 10-16 passengers while Small Ship Adventures are limited to 16-25. The small group experience is essential to OAT. In addition to seeing the main attractions, OAT immerses travelers in the local culture by visiting small villages, family homes, schools, churches, and farms, something many other tour operators cannot provide due to their large group sizes. Experiences are enhanced by the expertise of OAT’s Trip Leaders, who are English speaking natives of each destination. Their knowledge of history, culture, and nature is reinforced by their passion for their homeland.

OAT makes adventurous travel comfortable by providing approachable yet engaging experiences for their travelers. With charming accommodations and approachable excursions, travelers need not be athletic or outdoorsy.

Who Will Go

OAT specializes in tours for Americans over 50. Travelers should be comfortable with 3 miles of walking per day, standing for half hour increments, and 3-5 hours of daily physical activity. Some travelers may be interested in bringing grandchildren along. OAT requests that younger travelers be at least 13 years old.

Solo travelers can take advantage of the free singles OAT offers on each tour, or participate in the roommate matching program. The travelers' forum is also an excellent place to find possible companions for sharing accommodations.

Where You'll Go

Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe, Middle East, South America, South Pacific, and Cuba

When You'll Go

Itineraries depart year round, with most occurring during the peak season in each particular destination. Average trip length is about 16 days.

Highlights: We saw wonderful locations and had great experiences but the best part was our guide, Motti Saar. There is so much to see and learn about and Motti explained everything. Our group was pretty compatible even though it was election season :-\ I cannot list all the other wonderful moments as I will be typing all day. Just go.

Advice: Enjoy Israel and OAT.

Highlights: I have been on 5 trips with Overseas Adventure Travel and am a group leader. The local guides have always been excellent. In working with OATS they have always been willing to make adjustments for my group. We are a little more daring then many . I like the fact that you have some free time and n some trips wish there was even more. Most places I take groups I have been myself. Hotels are fine. We never had a bad one. I'm not a fan of staying in a fancy hotel just for the sake of it. The Riads in Morocco are particularly nice. There were some really oner the top hotels as well. If you have a chance take the trip to Turkey as the 4 days on our own boat on the Mediterranean are fabulous.Hot Air Balloon rides are always a must do. The nights in the desert in Morocco as far as I'm concerned are not to be missed.

Advice: Get involved! Ask questions of hosts on home visits. Be polite but if you're curious ask.Only downside is the places they take you to buy things are definitely a rip off. They take advantage of you as a tourist. Don't buy things you never would.

If your buying a souvenir fine. I had a woman who spent $5000 with me on a mirror in Morocco that she thought was a gapped deal because it was 1/2 price. It wasn't really worth 25% of what she paid. It was huge arrived broken and they said they would insure it, but only insured it for $1000. y opinion was that was what it was worth. Don't be foolish shopping. Just a note. To join my groups you have to be pleasant, easy going, not a prima donna, a bit adventurous.

People from many walks of life and 90% of people who travel with me continue to travel.

Highlights: We have taken 6 trips with OAT and have 21 people who we've recommended (they offer a special savings over and above when you are recommended by a former traveler). The small group format is excellent and the way they blend seeing the 'must sees' with integrating with the local culture makes for a very special experience. We've always had great people on the tour and excellent guides.

Advice: Read all the reviews before you go. You'll find tips shared by former travelers about what to bring and what you really don't need. Go light. And, if you are a first time traveler, say you are referred by a former traveler and you'll save an extra $100-per-person. You can feel free to use my name and # Jesse Slome 932019. We get a credit towards a future trip and I've already booked trip #7.

Highlights: I have been on 3 trips with them including Himalayas, Indonesia and Morocco. The tour guides are superb! The itineraries are in depth and will immerse you in the local culture. I will most likely be traveling with them again. Their customer service is the best of any travel company that I have ever worked with. The hotels tend to be 3-4 star boutique hotels and have been OK to excellent in my experience.

Advice: Peruse their web site and read the travel reviews from travelers on the destination that you are interested in.

Advice: Overseas Travel is my favorite travel company. I have enjoyed every adventure I have had with them. I always felt safe and learned so much about our world.

Highlights: Excellent tour guide in Costa Rica. Love the home visits and spontaneity interacting with people in the countries to which we traveled. Several friends consistently go with OAT and always have rave reviews.

Advice: Look at the flights - if they don't work, contact OAT and arrange other flights. They're very responsive.

Highlights: I loved the personal interaction you have with the community and the large educational component. We learned about history, geography, local customs and taboos, foods. We also got to dine in private homes in very small groups and speak to families about their lives. The guides we all very informative and friendly and the travel arrangements always went off without a hitch.

Advice: OAT is great for small group travel. I went to Australia and Africa with them and I have booked a river cruise to Amsterdam and Brussels for this spring.

You really get to visit places that other travelers don't get a chance to see with experienced guides. In Australia we had city tours and then had time to explore on our own. The trip to Africa was life changing. Being in the bush with no TV, Phones, Internet or newspapers was wonderful. Just communing with nature and interacting with the local people.

Highlights: Being taken care of - if there were any glitches I didn't know about them or have to deal with them. Our tour guide was wonderful - very smart, friendly, and happy. On our trip in Costa Rica we learned a lot about their lifestyle, the geography of the country, wildlife, and government structure . The pace was great we saw much of the country. The meals were great! It was a wonderful trip!

Advice: Pack light, be organized, enjoy!

Highlights: Two trips that I have taken with them, to China and to Peru and Machu Picchu, were excellent. Wonderful guides all the way. They seemed to go over and beyond what one would expect. I don't think there is a better value in the industry. Also, the attention to detail before and duting the trips was terrific. I am looking forward to going to Norway with them next year.

Advice: Please check out Grand Circle and OAT. There's not a better value out there.

Highlights: Our one trip with Overseas Adventure Travel was to China, and one highlight was experiencing a different culture. Part of that was an overnight home-hosted visit with a local village family near Xian. Also, OAT travel groups are limited in size, allowing travelers to go places and do things not available to larger groups, eg, going to a remote and unrestored portion of the Great Wall, not available to large groups. Other highlights were traveling on an overnight train from Beijing to Xian, and cruising on the Yangtze River for 3 nights and going through the Three Gorges Dam (new, at the time of our trip).

Advice: OAT trips tend to be more adventurous, rugged, and challenging, so I recommend adhering to OAT advise about assessing one's physical limitations. On our trip, one elderly gentleman really had a rough time navigating rugged terrain, keeping up with the rest of the group, etc.

Highlights: We went to Peru (Amazon and Machuu Pichuu) and to Ecuador (Galapagos) and had a great time. Adventure and Education from start to finish. Many interesting co-travellers and out guides were wonderful and patient! I went with my sister, but in the future may need to travel solo and I love that OAT Travel has no or low single supplements and roommate matching. And all of the best places in the world to travel to. A safari is one of my next trips shortly after retirement.

Advice: OAT takes care of you from the moment you board your flight in your home airport till you return there. I never felt that I was totally on my own. Single supplements are rare or low and they have roommate matching for those interested. You meet all types of interesting people. I haven't able to go for quite some time but plan on many trips in the future. The catalog has several bent corners from my wish list. When retired, I plan to do as many as I can.
